" GENERAL COMPOSITION OF THE LUNGS "
The right and left lungs are soft, elastic organs that occupy most of the thoracic cavity. The right and left lungs are soft, elastic organs that occupy most of the thoracic cavity. Much of the lung tissue consists of a complex set of branching tubes, the bronchi, bronchioles, and aveolar ducts. These passageways conduct air throughout all parts of the lungs. Surrounding the tubes and ducts are appoximately 300 million alveoli and associated blood vessels. The alveoli are thin-walled, cup-shaped, sacs that protrude from the ends of the smallest ducts. They make up most of the lung volume and are the regions where gases are exchanged with nearby blood vessels.
